John Maclean’s Centenary Update
Edinburgh People’s Festival member Calum Martin delivered a word perfect rendition of the Red Clydeside leaders actual reply to the sedition charge. ‘I stand here not as the accused’ declared Maclean ‘but the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot’.
Calum can be seen outside the very Court that had sentenced Maclean 100 years ago. This implacable anti-imperialist opponent of WW1 was ordered to spend 6 years in Peterhead doing hard labour after being found guilty of the sedition charge. But the punishment meted out to Maclean was condemned for being too severe and the public outcry led to his early release just 6 months later.
